Greek Letters Copy and Paste

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters. Mathematics, physics, statistics and engineering borrow most of them, which is why α, β, π, Σ and Ω turn up far more often than the language itself does.
Every letter on this page also lists its Unicode code point, HTML entity and Windows ALT code, so you can type it directly when you need to.

How to type Greek letters on Windows
Hold ALT and type the decimal code on the numeric keypad, then release ALT. For alpha that is ALT 945 and for capital Sigma it is ALT 931. The codes are listed next to every letter in the tables above.
In Microsoft Word there is a faster route: type the code point (03B1 for alpha) and press ALT + X. Word swaps the code for the character. Pressing ALT + X again turns it back.
- Numeric keypad only: the number row along the top will not work for ALT codes.
- On a laptop without a keypad, use the copy buttons above or Windows key + full stop to open the emoji and symbol panel.
How to type Greek letters on a Mac
Open System Settings, go to Keyboard, then Input Sources, and add Greek. A flag appears in the menu bar and CTRL + SPACE switches layouts, which turns the whole keyboard Greek.
For one-off symbols, press CTRL + CMD + SPACE to open the Character Viewer, search for the letter name, and double click it.
Greek letters in HTML, CSS and LaTeX
In HTML you can write the named entity, for example α for α and Ω for Ω, or the numeric entity α. In CSS content values use the escape \03B1. In LaTeX the commands are \alpha, \beta, \Sigma and so on, inside maths mode.
If your page declares UTF-8 (and it should), you can simply paste the character into the source and skip the entity entirely.
What each Greek letter is used for
A few letters carry so much meaning that people search for them by job rather than by name.
- π (pi) is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, roughly 3.14159.
- Σ (capital sigma) means summation, and σ (small sigma) is standard deviation.
- Δ (capital delta) means change or difference, as in Δt.
- μ (mu) is the micro prefix, one millionth, and also the population mean.
- Ω (capital omega) is the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance.
- λ (lambda) is wavelength in physics and an anonymous function in programming.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy a Greek letter?
Click the letter in any grid on this page. It goes straight to your clipboard and a Copied confirmation appears. Then press CTRL + V (CMD + V on a Mac) wherever you need it.
How do I type the pi symbol?
Click π above to copy it, press ALT 960 on a Windows numeric keypad, or type 03C0 in Word and press ALT + X.
Why does my Greek letter show as a box or a question mark?
The font in use has no glyph for that code point, or the document is not being read as UTF-8. Switch to a common font such as Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman or Noto, and make sure the file encoding is UTF-8.
Are capital Alpha and Latin A the same character?
They look the same but they are different characters. Greek capital Alpha is U+0391 and Latin A is U+0041. Search, sorting and spell checking treat them as different, so copy the Greek one when you mean Greek.
What is the difference between σ and ς?
Both are small sigma. ς is the final sigma, used only as the last letter of a word in Greek text. Mathematics uses σ everywhere and never needs ς.
Can I use Greek letters in a domain name or a username?
Sometimes. Many platforms restrict usernames to Latin characters, and domain names need an internationalised form. Test before you commit to one.
