Superscript character

Superscript one ¹

¹ is the superscript form of 1. Click it to copy, then paste it anywhere: unlike the formatting button in a word processor, this is a real character, so it survives being pasted into a bio, a username, a chat message or a spreadsheet cell.

Per-unit rates such as m s⁻¹, and first footnote markers.

The matching subscript character is ₁.

Superscript and subscript generator

Type anything. The converter swaps each character for its Unicode superscript or subscript form, which you can paste into places that do not support formatting, such as a bio, a chat message or a spreadsheet cell.

Unicode has no superscript for q and no subscript for most letters, so those characters are left unchanged.

How to type ¹

The copy button above is the quickest route on any device. If you would rather type it: in Microsoft Word, type 00B9 then press ALT + X and Word converts the code into ¹.

On Windows you can also hold ALT and type 185 on the numeric keypad. This only works with a real keypad, not the number row.

In HTML write ¹, in CSS use \00B9, and in JavaScript or Python use the escape \u00B9.

Unicode superscript versus formatting

A word processor or a web page can raise ordinary text with formatting, which looks better because the font designer scaled the glyph properly. That formatting is lost the moment the text is copied into a plain text field.

¹ is a character in its own right, so it keeps working in an Instagram bio, a Discord name, a YouTube comment, a CSV file or a commit message. The trade-off is that it renders slightly differently from font to font, and that screen readers may read it as plain 1.

Rule of thumb: use real formatting in documents and on web pages you control, and use ¹ where formatting is not available.

Where ¹ is used

Per-unit rates such as m s⁻¹, and first footnote markers.

It is worth remembering that search engines and spell checkers do not always treat ¹ as 1, so avoid it in text that people will search for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy ¹?

Click the large character at the top of this page. It copies to your clipboard, then paste with CTRL + V or CMD + V.

What is the Unicode for ¹?

U+00B9. In HTML that is ¹, and in CSS it is \00B9.

Why does ¹ look different in different apps?

Each font draws its own superscript glyphs, and some fonts have none, in which case the system substitutes a glyph from another font. That is why the size and the baseline can shift.

Will ¹ work on Instagram, TikTok and Discord?

Yes. It is ordinary Unicode text, so it pastes into bios, captions and usernames on every major platform.
